Bad news for all fans of busking, buskers and the rights of people to stand around on the street making a racket. The buskers have lost their court case against Camden Council, who are now free to enact their new policy of forcing all buskers in the borough to apply for a permit.
I spoke to Jonny Walker, the man who has been spearheading the buskers cause, to hear his reaction. He called me from his hotel room, on the evening of the court case.
This move by the council is clearly symptomatic of Camden town’s strange and regrettable journey from a really important part of underground culture to a sanitized memorial to underground culture.
